On the June of1999, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and State Council promulgated a decision on deepening education reform and pushing forward quality education all around to encourage comprehensive universities and non-normal universities to participate in teacher education. The decision braked up the closed teacher trained system which teacher can just be trained from normal universities. After that more and more comprehensive universities and non-normal universities participate in teacher education by setting up colleges of education. Upon this background, the thesis firstly reviews the history of colleges of education in the universities of China and then lays special stress on analyzing its present situation from three aspects of the number, the level and the type. From the analysis of the number, we can find that about one third of universities of China have been set up colleges of education and more of them are comprehensive universities and non-normal universities. Compared with the universities of "211"project and non-"985" or "211" project, the universities of "985" project set up more colleges of education. In terms of the level, most schools of education are master’s level. As to the type, the thesis also analyzes it from three aspects of the location, the discipline structure and the scale. There are four main locations of colleges of education in universities of China:educational technology or occupation technology education, teacher education, education research and the location of comprehensive colleges. Teacher education is the main location among them. As to the discipline, most colleges of education in universities of China are set up with the first-grade discipline and there are still a few colleges of education are set up with the second-grade discipline. From the analysis of the scale, we find that most colleges of education in universities of China are middle-scale and small-scale. At last, the thesis puts forward some problems about the settings of colleges of education in universities of China. Firstly, the settings of them are blind, disordered and random. Secondly, each college’s disciplines are alike and they are restricted to a narrow bound. Lastly, most colleges of education in universities pursuit comprehensive and multiple locations blindly.
