Doctoral students, as the elite groups, are the core of human resources. In this context, doctoral students’academic ability directly relates to the national science and technology strength training and competitiveness.Based on the concept of doctoral students’academic ability and the selection of the national excellent doctoral dissertations in China since1999, this paper tries to discuss the key factors affecting the doctoral students’academic ability. Firstly, in order to comprehensively access to doctoral academic ability influence factors, the author reads a lot of existing research results, and analyzes the existing research methods, research conclusions and research deficiencies; Secondly, we interview some of Zhejiang university doctoral students who won or nominated the best dissertation across the country, and three typical cases of them are profoundly analyzed. We received three main parameters that influence doctoral students’academic ability:personal, mentor, and environment. At the same time, combining with existing corresponding investigation, interview records, we build doctoral student academic ability influence factors framework and doctoral student academic ability development model. Thirdly, by sorting Zhejiang university national excellent dissertation winners’and nominees’datas, we make statistical analysis to investigate several important factors influencing the doctoral students’academic ability. Lastly, we put forward policy suggestions to improve doctoral students’academic ability and cultivate more outstanding doctoral students.Improving the doctoral students’academic ability is a system engineering. Acknowledging the key factors that influences doctoral students’academic ability can contribute to the improvement of doctoral students’academic ability. The results provide theoretical basis and practical guidance for universities to train more outstanding doctoral students.
