The general world knowledge of readers includes two meanings. On one hand, it means the general knowledge. On the other hand, it means the knowledge of the politics, geography, history, value, custom and religious faith of the target language countries. This research uses the meaning of the custom of the target language countries-the Chinese traditional festivals to discuss the influence of the Chinese traditional festivals familiarity on the text information processing by Southeast Asian students, as to answer the question how the general world knowledge influences the text information processing.This research makes narrative stories as experimental material, using moving window and recording the time of recognition sentence technique. The present study uses repeated measurement experiment to design two experiments from focus-based reading and afocal reading, in order to explore the functions of the familiar of background information on the text information processing. Through the research we draw the following several conclusions.(1) The Chinese traditional festival activities which Southeast Asian students are familiar with are as follows:the activity of pasting couplets, the acticity of giving New Year’s greetings and the activity of eating moon cakes during the mid-autumn festival. The Chinese traditional festival activities which Southeast Asian students are unfamiliar with are the activity of spring outing, the activity of drinking Laba porridge during the Laba festival and the activity of climbing and banqueting during the double ninth festival.(2) The influence of background information on the present reading text information processing includes the text background information itself and the general world knowledge of readers. The influence of the general word knowledge familiar on the text information processing decides on the characteristics of reading materials.(3) In afocal reading, the general world knowledge familiar of readers doesn’t affect the integration process of the current information and the background information, but directly affects the reading speed of the current information. The general word knowledge which readers are familiar with can more easily promote to process the current reading information than that which readers are not familiar with.(4) In focus-based reading, the influence of the general world knowledge familiar on the focus-based reading decides on whether or not the information related to the general world knowledge of readers is the reading focus. If it is not reading focus, relevant background information will not be updated, that is to say, the general world knowledge familiar will not affect on the current reading text information processing.(5) About the reading information processing mode, according to different reading characteristics, readers will use different information integration mode. If the text information is the reading focus, readers will choose the active strategic mode to construct and update the focus. If there is no reading focus, reader will choose the coordination integration mode to read. The result of the coordinating integration is to form new information block.
