In recent years, as the importance of English teaching in primary school is greatly valuedby the whole society, English in primary school has become a compulsory course. However,there are many problems in English teaching in the primary school. The most serious problemis that there is a trend that the more difficult English learning is, the less interest students have.Researchers have begun to investigate how to use game in the teaching process to makechildren’ classroom full of fun. It is well known that teachers play an important role inchildren’ English learning. However, it is not easy to stimulate students’ interest, which needsskills and ability. Therefore, the thesis tries to explore the possibility of stimulating students’interest in English learning. Meanwhile, the researcher hopes that it can be helpful forteaching activities for English teachers in primary schools.Teaching with games meets the need of children’ physiological and psychologicaldevelopment and it can develop their interest. For children, to live is to play. Playing gamecan cultivate children’ various abilities, such as intelligence, cognition, and socialcommunication activities and so on. Game teaching makes students actively participate inclassroom learning, by which they will experience the joy of learning, and acquire the senseof success and satisfaction, which is very beneficial to children’ lifelong learning.Games, a popular important strategy in English teaching of the primary schools, play agreat role in interaction between teachers and students. The game strategy combining thelearners’ age characteristics, interests and needs makes it possible for students to play, learnand grow up in the game. Since the game strategy plays such an important role in teaching, itis critically necessary to explore how to make full use of its role. The thesis discusses thegame teaching in primary school, and put forward the corresponding teaching strategies according to problems.Firstly, the thesis clarifies the significance of games in children’ English teaching,characteristics of games, and how to use game in class from the view of psychology, secondlanguage acquisition theory.Secondly, the author selects two classes as experimental class and control class fromGrade three in Zhanglu city primary school. The same teacher teaches the two classes, anduses the same teaching material, but different methods, game teaching in the experimentalclass, traditional way in the control class. The experiment lasts three months. Finally, throughthe analysis of classroom observation and students’ enthusiasm about learning English, theresearcher finds that game teaching is not only feasible, but also is an ideal teaching model inprimary schools. And then make survey about the status quo of the game teaching in Englishof primary schools and teachers’ difficulty in the implementation of the game teaching byquestionnaire and interview, the researcher finds that there are problems, mainly includingteachers’ bias of the use of the game teaching, teachers’ blindness in the application of thegame teaching, and the innovation of the game and so on.Thirdly, on the basis of the investigation of the current situation, combined with theresults of the investigation, considering children English learning features, the thesis proposesfour strategies, they are delicate presupposition to ensure the properness of the game teaching,proper guide to stimulate students’ interest of participating, constant interaction to createrelaxed learning atmosphere and timely summarization to guarantee the effectiveness of gameteaching. At last, provides some suggestions for the primary English teachers.The thesis includes six chapters. Chapter one is introduction, which introduces themotivation, purpose and significance of the study. Chapter two is literature review, whichclarifies the definition and characteristics of the game, and the research situations of gameteaching in foreign countries and China. Chapter three is theoretical framework, which introduces related theories. Chapter four is research design, which introduces researchhypothesis, questions, subjects, instruments and procedures, and dealing with experimentaldata by SPSS19.0. Chapter five is results and analysis. Chapter six is conclusion, whichintroduces major findings, limitations and suggestions.
