Through gradual development and strengthening, China has become one of the world’s economic and political centers. As a result, the number of people studying Chinese in the world has increased accordingly.The reform and opening of China in the1980s brought it into a period of economic strengthening, leading the path for China to become a global power. In1993, P.R. China and D.R. Korea began diplomatic relations, resulting in the two countries’frequent cultural interaction and partnering in concern for other countries. In accordance with these developments, China became a high priority in Korean diplomatic relations. In the21st century, as China became an economic and political focal point of the world, D.R. Korea also came under the influence of widespread Signification, and many Koreans became keen on studying the Chinese language. Toward the end of helping students learn Chinese, many Korean secondary schools have begun to offer Chinese courses. This research of this thesis paper focuses on the status and development of Chinese education in high schools in D.R. Korea.The research of this thesis firstly focuses on the seventh edition of Chinese study materials used in Korea; secondly on the status of Chinese study in Korean secondary schools; and finally, according to research done, recommendations are made for the proper development of Chinese language education in Korea.The purposes of this research are to analyze the current state of Chinese language education in Korea and, through statistical analysis of current Korean learners of Chinese as a second language, understand problems faced by learners of Chinese. As a result, the hope is to provide suggestions for the exploration of further developing the direction of Chinese learning in D.R. Korea. This thesis is divided into the following five chapters:Chapter1:Purpose and rationale for the research; description of research goals, scope, and methods.Chapter2:A review of the seventh edition of Chinese study materials and its objectives.Chapter3:An analysis of D.R. Korea’s students’choice for second language learning; statistical analysis of Chinese classes offered in Korean schools.Chapter4:Following the research done, a recommendation of a program of studies for Chinese Language, including recommended curriculum, arrangement of courses, language learning environment, and best practices.Chapter5:Conclusion of thesis with a summary of research findings, recommendations for Korean high school Chinese Language programs, as well as personal opinions and hopes for improvement on D.R. Korea’s high schools and their learning of the Chinese language.
