According to the new curriculum standard, to improve the students’ English abilities is oneof the important teaching tasks of the teachers at school. While in the daily teaching, manyteachers may feel that students’ English writing skills can not be fully trained, and it is verycommon that students’ English writing abilities are very poor. As the English teachers of theelementary education, we are responsible for exploring effective teaching strategies in Englishwriting teaching to improve students’ writing skills and lay a solid foundation for theirsuccessive study.About the strategies of English writing teaching, many teachers have made their ownpractice combining the theory of writing in the world. But the author’s literature search revealsthat the researches of English writing teaching on basic education stage are relatively fewer innumber than those in university English writing teaching. The teachers who work in the field ofbasic education are lack of more mature writing training mode for writing teaching even thoughthe terraced-training is practiced by some teachers initially, it has not yet formed systematictheory.Basing on the above research background, the author starts the study by researching andexploring the terraced-training model in writing on the basis of the teaching practices,Andforms the thesis. The terraced-training provides a new attempt for English writing teaching injunior middle school. The training mode applies writing strategies and writing theories to theteaching practice, and it aims to cultivate students’ interest in English, help the students grasp akind of skills, build the sense of writing strategies and make fewer errors, establish confidencein English study, build a solid foundation for students’ further development. And also it isexpected to provide a reference to other English teachers who are working in the field of basiceducation.The research is conducted among the students of Grade One in middle school. There arethree research methods used in the study including literature search method, survey method andexperimental comparison method. With the guiding of the three methods, the research isperformed Through the literature search the writer learned about the features of terraced-training inwriting, the theoretical basis of terraced-training teaching and the research background of thewriting teaching at home and abroad. The theoretical basis includes the cognition developmenttheory, the learning motivation theory, the meaningful learning theory, the learning transferencetheory and the constructivism theory.The survey method mainly referred to the questionnaire method.20questions on thewriting strategies are designed to know about students’ sense of writing strategies in pretest andposttest as well as the difficulties in their writing process.Experimental comparison method is mainly used in the whole process of the experiment.During the research methodology, firstly, three hypotheses are proposed. Then the researchsubjects, research variables and how to control the interference variables are analyzed, and thenthe terraced-training is conducted in the experimental class. Before the research, priorquestionnaire and interview, and prior test are applied to get the initial information of theresearch subjects. Then the terraced-training in writing is practiced in different aspectsincluding the writing styles, the writing themes, and writing skills. And also the researcher hasthe classroom memoir to get the detail comparative information and data. At the end of theresearch, the research subjects have post test and post questionnaire.In terms of the data collection and data analysis, the excel tool and SPSS statistical systemare used to collect the data and analyzed them.The research results are got from the analysis of the data. Firstly the teaching designs andthe time distribution of the classroom memoir in experimental class and comparative class arecompared with each other, and the result shows that the daily terraced-training in theexperimental class is better for students in improving English writing skills. Through thecomparison between pretest and posttest in writing, it is shown that the terraced-training inwriting could improve English writing. Through the comparison of the data from questionnaires,it can be seen that the sense of writing strategies are improved and the experimental class getmuch more improvement in writing ability.Through classroom observation, it is found that most of the students from the experimentalclass have stronger sense of participation than those from comparative class. Their languageoutput abilities both in oral English and writing English are improved step by step during the application of terraced-training in English writing teaching in junior middle school.Yet this research also reveals that there are lots of difficulties in helping the students whoare with poor English abilities and with bad personal habits.The research results give implications to both teachers and students in English teachingand study. The students’ confidences should be cultivated, and their writing strategies should beimproved. The teachers with higher teaching qualities are eagerly needed during the process ofterraced-training in writing teaching.In the last part of the thesis, the shortcomings are illustrated and it aims to shed light to thesuccessive research. Because of the limited time and experiment environment as well as otheruncontrollable conditions, this thesis lacks the process evaluation; meanwhile, the number ofthe research subjects is small, the full score for the writing test in the prior test and posttest. Sothis study just provides initial reference to the successive study.
