Academic adaptability is the process of students’ self-adjustment to adapt to the new learning environment. Students of different stages behave differently at this aspect. When the students first come to junior middle school, some will get into a good state of learning quickly and easily, while others will encounter kinds of difficulties.In this paper, through the analysis of the questionnaire I’ve made with the new students in three kinds of schools in Dalian Development Zone (urban schools, rural schools and rural-urban fringe schools), we have learnt about the level of their learning adaption, including their performance in understanding learning tasks, mastering new learning methods, adapting to the new environment as well as learning to communicate. We have studied the influence of various factors on their learning adaption which involves students’ gender, age, the school they study in, where they come from, the character of their head teacher, preference to computer games and home situation.The survey shows that the freshmen are aware that they should study consciously. However, they are weak in learning independently and they haven’t mastered the proper learning methods. On the other hand, they feel uncomfortable when communicating with their parents in study and thus feeling under pressure. The maladjustment to the new learning environment comes mainly from the school rules. It shows that the girls adapt better than the boys to the new learning tasks and learning environment. Local students are better at adaption than the children of migrant workers. And the students whose parents are highly educated perform better at this aspect. It also finds that the students’ adaptability varies little during the first four and half months. Their adaption to the following four aspects is still in the same order. They adapt best to the learning environment, then learning methods, then communication and at last learning tasks. But we find the biggest difference in their adaption to learning methods. And it gets worse and worse as time goes by.On the basis of careful survey, study and analysis, the following strategies are given to deal with different situations, thus helping the students better adapt to the new learning environment.Frist, Pay special attention to the development of the students’ learning methods to help them adapt to the study life in junior middle school.Second,It is normal for the parents to expect good performance from the students. However, instruction should be offered to help them expect rationally and moderately. On the other hand, parents’ expectation should be continued.Third, Try to perfect the school rules and keep carrying them out seriously. Keep helping the students to be socialized, which lays good foundation for their better adaption to the society in the future.Fourth, Help improve the adaptability of the boys in Grade One to the new learning tasks and learning environment.Fifth, Pay special attention to the migrant workers’ children in their adaption to the new school life.Sixth,Pay special attention to the adaptability of the new students whose parents are not highly educated.
