As a global language, English is an essential tool for students to communicate with the outside world and it has become an indispensable skill in personal development. As the number of secondary vocational schools and the scale expands, the overall quality of vocational school students is declining and students’ academic performance is poor, especially in English. In addition, the current English teaching in secondary vocational is not optimistic. The goals of teaching English are to make students learned and talkative rather than cultivating language experts and writing talents. But the present teaching, teachers still focus on English grammar and explanation which can be called mute-type English; From the view of English curriculum and teaching content, teaching methods and means and evaluation methods, we can learn that there is a strong contrast between the actual level of secondary vocational students and the social demand for high-quality skilled personals. As a result, the English teaching in secondary vocational schools gets into trouble gradually, the teaching enthusiasm is not high, classroom organization is difficult and students learning efficiency is low.In this paper, with many years’ teaching experience in Changsha School of Finance and Economics, the author analyses the present English teaching situation including of basic statistics of English teachers, curriculum, teaching methods and means, and the evaluation of classroom teaching and students’ learning of English on the basis of related survey and statistics. Then the author gave out some further related reasons. For example, the insufficient number of English teaching staff; English teaching does not reflect specialty; English teaching method is single; evaluation of classroom teaching is not clear; students are lack of initiative, etc.In view of the overall present situation in secondary vocational, this article puts forward the following specific strategies on the basis of research:to reduce teachers’ burden appropriately and enhance curriculum development and teachers’ training; to adopt all kinds of teaching methods and means; to establish practical evaluation system; to change the traditional teaching concepts and to stimulate students’ interest in learning English.
