The present research is based on sufficient literature research combining with the reality in a secondary vocational school that most of classes in the school are single-sex class. The study focuses the effects of single-sex classes for its students’ mental health. The research is an experimental study undertaken in Chengde nursing vocational college within18weeks from March to July,2013.The subjects were8natural classes students, four classes in Nursing Department which are single-sex classes and four rural medical classes in Medical Department which are coed classes. Methods SCL-90is adopted to investigate respectively on students’ mental health and the BEM is adopted to study the students’ types of gender distribution and simple coping style questionnaire is to investigate the tendency to cope with life’s difficulties. The results showed that students’ tow types of gender roles: bisexual and female’s are most widely distributed. There is no difference between male students and female students. The questionnaire shows the tendency of most students to cope with life’s difficulties is positive. the students’ higher scores than normal people’s of the nine factors on symptom self-assessment scale shows the students’ psychological health level is lower than the normal. Anyway, it is a normal phenomenon because students in secondary vocational school are in the period of forming mental health and various problems of puberty affect their psychological health. Generally speaking, most of the secondary vocational school students are positive to face up with difficulties. It shows that positive both gender roles of bisexual and female’s have positive effect on the students. There are benefits and shortcomings of single-gender class in the literature review. For example, male students in single-gender class tend to fight while female students are sensitive, frustrated and vulnerable. Positive guidance must be given from family, school. Teachers should communicate with students’ parents to eliminate the negative influences from his family and to strengthen positive effects. Schools should promote psychological health education and head teachers play a very important role. Firstly, they encourage students to shape and reshape personality, help students to develop the understanding of the standards of ancient perfect personality and learn how to behave themselves. Secondly, they guide the student to understand the knowledge and effects of gender roles and encourage them to improve their personality. This will help promote students’mental health development.
