In 1964,Rossi first proposed the concept of androgyny.Since then, the relevant studies on androgyny have been gradually enriched.Studies on different groups have jointly proved the flexibility of the gender role type with both masculine and feminine traits.Although the concept of gender in modern society has gradually broken the stereotype,to a considerable extent, there are still conflicts and controversies caused by gender in employment, marriage, and other fields. As the debate about "masculinity" and "feminine beauty" intensifies in the online environment,it is still one of the developmental propositions of current gender studies to explore the characteristics and applicability of different gender roles and advocate the integration of gender characteristics. The quantitative research uses four questionnaires: "Social Support Rating Scale","Life Orientation Test-Revised","Chinese University Students' Sex-role Inventory: 50 items","Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire".780 university students who come from 5 universities and 1 higher vocational and technical school in Nanjing and Shihezi City are investigated. The quantitative research explores the overall situation of university students' gender roles, coping styles, and subjective well-being and their relationships. In the subsequent qualitative research,semi-structured in-depth interviews are conducted with 8 college students to explore the internal relationship mechanism among the three variables. The results show that:1.The gender role types of university students are in descending order of androgynous, undifferentiated, masculine, and feminine. The scores of positive coping style and subjective well-being of university students are in descending order of androgynous, masculine, feminine, and undifferentiated;Negative emotion scores are ranked in descending order of undifferentiated, feminine, masculine, and androgynous.2.Different types of gender roles have significant differences in gender, grade, major, hometown, and whether being from one-child family. The score of positive coping style has a significant difference in grade, major, and whether suffering from somatic disease.Negative coping style scores are significantly different in grade and whether suffering from somatic disease.Subjective well-being scores are significantly different in grade, major, hometown, and whether being from one-child family.3.In the correlation analysis, there is a significant positive correlation between masculine and feminine traits and positive coping style; There is a significant positive correlation between feminine traits and negative coping style.Masculine traits and feminine traits are significantly positively correlated with subjective well-being,and negatively correlated with negative emotions.Positive coping style has a significant positive correlation with subjective well-being and a significant negative correlation with negative emotion.Negative coping style is positively correlated with negative emotion.4.In the regression analysis, both masculine traits and feminine traits can significantly positively predict subjective well-being.Positive coping style can significantly positively predict subjective well-being and negatively predict negative emotion.Negative coping style can significantly positively predict negative emotions. Both masculine and feminine traits can significantly predict positive coping style.feminine traits can significantly positively predict negative coping style.5.The mediating effect results shows that positive coping style plays a partial mediating role in the relationship between masculine traits, feminine traits and subjective well-being.6.The qualitative study finds that positive feminine traits are correlated with negative feminine traits.Individuals exhibiting more feminine traits experience more negative emotions and are more likely to use cathartic or evasive coping styles. In the face of stressful events, different individuals tend to adopt avoidance, denial and other negative coping styles in the early stage. After that, whether to adopt positive coping styles such as solving problems and seeking help will lead to different coping outcomes and subjective well-being levels. To sum up,it can be concluded that gender roles can directly or indirectly affect university students' subjective well-being through positive coping style. The androgynous synthesis of masculine and feminine positive traits can help individuals actively cope with stressful situations, thus helping to improve their subjective well-being.
