A Study On University Crisis Management Based On Cases

Nowadays, the worldwide crisis caused by the huge changes and interest conflicts are still frequent. China has gotten great achievements during the30years of Reform and Opening up. But also, China is confronted with different crisis caused by many complex social problems and conflicts. University is an important kind of social organizations. So it is also confronted with different crisis just like the society. Because there are many teachers and young students in university, once crisis happened, the result will be terrible. Therefore, improving the crisis management of university is very important.The research of crisis management in western countries began from1960s. There were many representatives and research productions that time."The World Crisis in Education" published in1968was the starting point of university crisis management. The research of crisis management in China was later than western countries. The first book about the research of crisis management was published in1980s. The research of university crisis management also began from that time. But the research was at a low and slow level.Actually, there are still many problems about crisis management in Chinese universities such as the lack of awareness, the unsound system. So the crisis caused by vis major, the crisis caused by problems and conflicts, the crisis caused by absence of management are frequent in Chinese universities. These crisis have deep reasons of their own, but the unsound system of crisis management is the sticking point.Based on two cases that one is successful case in USA, and the other one is abortive case in China. We contrast and analyze the two cases at three periods (preventing and preparing before crisis, replying and handling in crisis, recovering and summarizing after crisis). And we find that a scientific and perfect system of crisis management is very important for university.Based on case analysis, we can set up a scientific and perfect system of crisis management. This system has three periods:before crisis, in crisis, after crisis. Before crisis, university should pay attention to prevention. University should improve teachers’ and students’ sense of crisis and their ability of prevention. And university should establish a professional office for crisis management and formulate a contingency plan.In crisis, university should deal with it quickly. First step, clear the target. Second step, implement the contingency plan. Third step, force the pace. Fourth step, collect the right and valuable information. Fifth step is decision making. Last step, implement the decision. University also should release information in crisis.After crisis, university should pay attention to recovery including repairing buildings and communal facilities, repairing the psychic trauma of teachers and students. Then university should rethink profoundly and summarize the crisis including finding the reasons, finding out who is to blame, improving the work, analyzing and improving the crisis management and placing on file.
