There are500high school students from8randomly selected high schools in three districts of Wuhan participated in this study. They reported their self-perceived leadership by answering questionnaires. The instrument used to assess the students’self-perception of leadership skills was Leadership Skills Inventory (LSI), developed at Iowa State University in1980by Carter (Townsend,1981). The refined LSI consisted of21five internal scales for analysis:working with groups, understanding self, making decisions, communicating, and leadership. In this study, based on the literature review, author selected five independent variables:family status, gender, leadership experience, leadership aspirations and learned leadership knowledge and skills. Correlation analysis was used to analyze the impact of independent variables on youth leadership. The main conclusions are as follows:1. The reliability and validity of Leadership Skills Inventory is good for youth leadership measurement and evaluation.2. Students’ self-perception of working with groups and self-understanding are on a high level.4. Family status and gender have no significant relationship with youth leadership. Leadership experience, leadership aspiration and learned leadership knowledge and skills have positive impacts on youth leadership. We should offer equal opportunities for both boys and girls with no bias on their background, inspire their motivation of leadership, motivate them to do active learning on leadership knowledge and skills.
