This research first studies the leadership development through PE teaching, and explores a students'leadership development model in PE teaching. The validity is also tested by a strict teaching experiment in middle school.Based on the theories of experimental learning, cooperative learning and behavior reinforcement as the foundation, combined with the approaches provided for leadership development by PE teaching, this paper discribes a students'leadership development model in PE teaching. It is divided into 4 stages:awareness and cognition, learning and mastery, practice and application, evaluation and advancement. The target and task, the organizational form, the methods and means of each stage are specifically discribed as well.Subjects,197 students are selected in a middle school of Wuhan, in which 61 are junior school students(31 experimental and 30 controls),136 are high school students (31 experimental and 31 controls are in basketball elective course as collective item,40 experimental and 34 controls are in aerobics elective course as individual item).Only experimental students are exposed to a continuous 15-week leadership development intervention in PE teaching.Leadership skill inventory developed by Carter & Townsend (1980) and self-complied leadership training feedback questionnaire are adopted to implement outcome evaluation and process evaluation. Meanwhile, student's sport performances are also measured. Statistical tool of SPSS is used to analyze the data by discriptive statistical analysis, multi-factor variance analysis and repetitive measure variance analysis.The main conclusions are as follows:1. The implementation of leadership training in PE teaching can improve students' leadership effectively.2. The implementation of leadership training in PE teaching has no influence on students'sport learning.3. The effect of leadership training can be retained to a certain degree.4.73.5% students satisfy with the training curriculum and teacher.5. Put forward some improvement suggestions for the implementation of leadership development model, to increase the opportunities for leadership practice, to emphasis teachers'role of guidence, to increase and create intuitive activities, to extend the training cycle, to set some housework (reflective journal writing of leadership), to emphasize the diversified evaluation.
