The United States has the most developed higher education in the world today. No matterits large scale research universities or the rich academic achievements and the educated elitesall over the world, all of which makes the United States become the acknowledged elite highereducation model. Looking around the world, competition for grasping excellent brains isbecoming much fiercer at present. We know that science and technology is the first productivityand human resource is the first social capital. Therefore, based on the background of the fierceglobal competition for talent and according to a batch of the top research universities as thebreakthrough point,the author take the elite higher education in the United States as theresearch object. Through the comprehensive in-depth research to America elite higher educationthe author tries to provide with some theoretical references for the development of highereducation in our country. Due to the structural shortage of talents in China and high technicaltalents are far behind the leading countries. In such a situation, to research the elite highereducation is undoubtedly an important way to create high-tech talents and develop high qualityeducation.Through a deep analysis of the domestic and foreign literatures, the paper forms a richtheoretical data, and reveals the characteristic of American elite higher education. The wholepaper is mainly used some scientific methods as following: literature method; factor analysismethod; case study method and comparison method, which give a comprehensive illustration tothe external environment and internal operation of the American elite higher education.Paper is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction that includes the researchstatus both at home and abroad, also the definitions, etc. The second part introduces thehistorical evolution of American elite higher education and sums up the characteristics indifferent periods. The third part deepens into each subsystem of the school education,containing from training target; course characteristics; teaching activities; teachers; studentselection and funding, altogether six aspects of America’s elite higher education, and choosingmany top research universities as samples, providing with a detailed theoretical basis. Thefourth part presents the analysis of the American elite higher education and sums up the missionof its higher education and development. The fifth part is the enlightenment to our country’shigher education. I hope through the study of the American elite higher education, we cancreate a batch of first-class universities at the present stage in China. As conclusions: the government should play an important role of its policy guidance andgive more academic autonomy to universities; Colleges and universities should combine theirown advantages for a characteristic development; Also the paper is called for the numerous elitestudents to reshape their spirit, to pursue excellent and to learn for the rise of China.
