How well is the teaching activity going has a direct influence on university talentquality. However the situation is far from optimistic, recessive absence is common nowdays. It is of great importance to study the class participation, its status quo and relatedcharacters and to analysis the influence factors. It may benefit learning efficiency andteaching quality improving, and provide some strategies to boost class participation.This study has been carried out in the selected university in Suzhou by applyingobservation, questionnaire and interview methods. The main object of this study is classparticipation, its status quo and characters and influence factors. Influence of grade, major,sense of life meaning, learning style and matching condition of learning and teaching styleson class engagement is highlighted in this paper.A few conclusions can be attained by analyzing the characters of class participation ofcollege students when observation method is adopted.(1) The ‘front–middle seat effect’ is common in the college classroom, students whotake the front and middle seats incline to participate with more passion than the otherstudents.(2) Students tend to participate in class passively, not in an active way.(3) Students participate more actively when they attend specialized courses thangeneral ones.Using questionnaire to explore the status quo and influence factors, the followingconclusions can be summarized.(1) There is no significant gender difference in university students’ class participation.(2) There is significant gender difference in university students’ class participation.The freshmen have a higher level of than students of other grades, regarding to behaviorparticipation, cognitive participation, emotion participation and overall level of classparticipation. No significant difference is observed between the other grades.(3) Significant difference of class participation can be obtained between different major. In general, medical students have the highest participation level when the artsstudents get the worst and student who majored in science get the medium level.(4) There is a strong positive correlation between sense of life meaning and classparticipation. Better sense of life meaning, the higher level of class participation.(5) A strong positive correlation between learning style and class participation isfound. The preference for five kinds of learning styles is more obvious among the studentswho have a higher participation level than those who don’t.(6) There seems an ‘agreement’ between teachers and students on the five kinds oflearning styles and this kind of match correlates with class participation positively.
