Virtual experiment is widely used in teaching, which is merely reflected its purefunction in technology vividly. Therefore, the teaching effectiveness and sustainabilityof virtual experiment are also slightly questioned. The research on virtual experimentpaid more attention to the gene form of technology, and ignored the approach of howto use the form, namely the design of function. This leads to some questions in theprocess of using experiment such as poor usability, ignorance of learners’ diverseneeds and experience, lacking of training problem-solving skills. How to make thevirtual experiment in line with the learners’ cognitive features, behavior habits, goodemotional experience, and meet the needs of learners of different levels is one of theimportant study content of virtual experiment design. In order to enhance the teaching quality of virtual experiment, there are manyadvanced design ideas in different field continuously introduced to the design ofvirtual experiment, but the related research about experience needs is relatively poor. Some scholars such as William Lidwell put forward “rotary” thought, a new designidea, in the book called ‘design principles’. The thought try to improve the efficiencyand usability in the process of using virtual experiment, and make the virtualexperiment more flexible and elastic from various angles. This study attempts tointroduce the design concept of “Rotary” to virtual experiment design, trying to seeksome feasible plans to improve and optimize the quality of virtual experiment.Through analyzing the current status of the development of virtual experimentand summarizing the current problems of virtual experiment, this article focuses onthe problems. Based on the hierarchy needs of users’ experience, immersion (flow)theory and the theory of design psychology, we introduce rotary thoughts into thedesign of virtual experiment, and put forward the precipitation of rotary design ofvirtual experiment. From the perspective of multi-level demands, we use the systemdynamic method to build a rotary design driven model of virtual experiment based onlearners’ demands, which describes the dynamic relationship between all the elements of rotary design. Based on the model, we build a rotary virtual experiment designmodel. Through this model we provide a concrete way and some principles about howto implement virtual experiment design on four aspects, called functional visibility, reversibility, fault tolerance and safety net. In order to make further study on rotaryvirtual experiment design, we select “mechanical virtual experiment system” as a caseto show how to use the model in practice. The organizational structure of this paper and the main content of the chaptersare as follows:The first chapter briefly introduces the background of the problem and putforwards that there are still some problems need to improve through analyzing theadvantages and disadvantages of some typical cases. Through searching andresearching the literatures at home and abroad, we summarize the current problems, illustrate the necessity of virtual experiment rotary design, and we treat theseproblems as the research direction and focus on further research. At the same time, weintroduce this paper’s contents, research methods and significance. In the second chapter we describe the definition and origin of “convolute” and“rotary design thought”, Through analyzing the hierarchy needs of users’ experience, immersion (flow) theory and the theory of design psychology, based on summarizingthe Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and the five layers demands of the users’ experience, and integrate with the characteristics of virtual experiment, we divide the experiencedemand levels of learners in virtual experiment. Immersion theory analyzes variousfactors affecting immersion, and provides a reference for learners obtaining flowexperience in the process of operating virtual experiment. The sense perception, cognition, emotion, availability in design psychology play an important role inanalyzing and researching virtual experiment’s elements, learners’ experience and therotary design. Under the guidance of these theories and combing with the features ofvirtual experiment, we put forward the concept of virtual experiment rotary design. The third chapter starts from the perspectives that virtual experiment rotarydesign should meet learners’ diversified demands, analyzing learners’ needs, couplingwith the characteristics of virtual experiment, using the system dynamic method to describe various influence factors of rotary design and the dynamic relationshipbetween each other, and building specific guidance design of the maneuver design ofvirtual experiment model. At last, we build a rotary virtual experiment design modelwhich involves functional visibility, reversibility, fault tolerance and safety net.The fourth chapter selects a basic mechanical virtual experiment system as a caseso as to further research on rotary design of virtual experiment. In this case, the rotaryvirtual experiment design model is applied to the specific case, designing the virtualexperiment includes functional visibility, reversibility, fault tolerance and safety net,and getting learners’ evaluation information through a questionnaire survey. The fifth chapter summarizes the main research results and deficiencies in theprocess, evaluates and reflects the existing problems, and at the same time looksforward to subsequent research work.
