Survey Research Of Teaching Capacity Among College Students In Music Major

Given its importance for student’s overall development, music education is part of education for all-around development. Teachers’ teaching capacity is highly associated with students’ achievement. Music schools at college level aim to prepare their students to become excellent music teachers at elementary, middle, and high schools. However, many graduates from music schools lack teaching experience. Most of them have more performance experience than teaching experience. Some of them have high GPAs, but cannot teach well in classroom. Lacking of teaching experience in college, they have hard time adjusting to their new roles as teachers. Most of them do not start gaining teaching experience until they started working at schools. By that time, they barely manage to be a qualified teacher rather than an excellent music teacher.This study is based on a survey of the students in music major at three colleges in Changsha. This study shows teaching capacity of current students in music major, and provides suggestions for improving music teacher education.Chapter One focuses on the background of this studying, including the importance of this study, existing literature in China and other countries, the definition of teaching capacity and related terms, study sample, research questions, and methods. Chapter Two shows the results from the survey at three colleges in Changsha, including general teaching capacity, music teaching capacity, and all-around teaching capacity. This part aims to provide a comprehensive overview of teaching capacity of college students in music major in Changsha. Chapter Three shows the analysis results from analyzing the survey data. It summarized problems with current teaching capacity training and provides suggestions for improving music teacher education.
