Along with the development of reform and opening up since the1980s, great changeshave happened in politics, economy, education and other social fields. In such a background,student management in colleges and universities must improve its personnel training qualityby means of reform and innovation for its own development. At the same time, variousstudies of complexity system theory were born; in particular, the theory of complex adaptivesystem (CAS) of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) provides us with the method to analyzecomplexity, allowing us to solve complex problems in reality from a new perspective. Basedon the complex adaptive system theory and management theory, this research offers ananalysis from three aspects.First, this paper expounds the historical evolution of the student management work incolleges and universities at home and abroad, in order to understand how it can adapt to thechange of social economic environment through its own adjustment in different backgroundsand point out the current main problems of university students’ management mode in ourcountry.Second, taking the university student management system as a complex adaptive system,this study analyzes the mechanism of its individual and its whole system by using thestimulus-response model and echo model respectively.Finally, based on the complex adaptive system theory and management theory and inview of the current problems of university students’ management in our country, this articlebuilds four types of student management patterns, namely, the college freshmen’ adaptiveeducation, identification, stimulation and student management organization.College freshmen’ adaptive education pattern fully uses the principle ofthe-broken-symmetry and lever fulcrum, paying attention to students adaptation education interms of their ideal faith, learning, life and psychology during the freshman year, which canprovide a good start for the whole period of university study and life.The purpose of student management identification pattern is to put students into the goodidentification environment, using the “hidden curriculum” of student management toundertake a comprehensive and overall permeable education in the whole university period. Incentive model inspires managers and students’ inner motivation according to the purpose oftheir actions respectively, enhancing their positive initiative in work and learning bystrengthening the ideal behavior continuously.The student management organization pattern builds the adaptive living system ofmanagement institution as an addition o the first three patterns from the perspective of systemmodular.It is concluded that the combination of four patterns can greatly promote the reform ofstudent management work in colleges and universities. In operation, with the augmentation ofthe interaction between mechanism and the increasing of flexibility, there is possibly a higherfrequency of the emergence. Therefore, the university students’ management mode withemergent properties constructed in this paper has a good application value because it maypromote students’ active participation and arouse student cadres, student managementworkers and all the staff’s enthusiasm, initiative and creativity.
