Textbook,which is used by both teachers and students, is one of the most importantteaching and learning materials. It is very important to evaluate primary English textbooksobjectively in order to make good use of it. However, researches on evaluating PEP textbookspublished in2012haven’t started.According to the studies of English textbook evaluation in China and other countries,this paper will use questionnaire and a collection of literature materials to make a systematicevaluation of PEP published in2012, and that textbooks were newly used by primary schools.Theoretically, this study will enrich the current studies on textbook evaluations and become areference for textbook evaluation studies in the future. Practically, this study will helpstudents and teachers in primary schools make good use of the textbooks and will help theEnglish teaching in the primary school.The teachers and students engaged in this study have already used2012version of thePEP textbooks. The students are from grade four. Compared with grade three students, thestudents from grade four, have began to use the version of teaching material last semester andby the end of the study they have learned the teaching material of the two textbooks of thegrade three and the first textbook of grade four. Students of grade four have developed theirown self-consciousness and have formed their own ideas.Research questions in this study are the following ones: Do the new textbooks meet therequirements of New English Curriculum and the needs of primary school students andteachers? And what are the advantages and disadvantages of the new textbooks? Whichparts still need to be improved?In this study the questionnaires are major research tools, which include a teacherquestionnaire and a student questionnaire. They were adopted from the questionnairedesigned by He Anping, a professor in South China Normal University and New CurriculumCertification of China. The survey was conducted in October2013in primary schools ofLinyi, Shandong. Teachers and students, especially students of grade four engaged in thissurvey have used PEP textbooks.The questionnaire data was analyzed with the help of the statistical software SPSS. The interview data was entered after interview.The study shows that2012PEP has a unique and skillful way to embody therequirements stipulated by New English Curriculum for Chinese Primary Schools. It coversthe topics required by the curriculum. Each unit is built around a theme. Vocabulary isrendered in context and closely connected with other language skills. It follows the syllabus ina creative way and balances the requirements of school examination and students’ interests.Of all parts, students and teachers like Let’s do most. However, it also has some limitationsand problems. The matching material is not sufficient enough, and it also lacks systematicallygrammar teaching, training of reading and writing,let alone abundant western and easternculture material and printing problems of the alphabet.
