The target of this thesis is the edition of The Diary of Zeng Guofan-three volumes in total–firstly published by Yuelu Press in1987. This version was punctuated according to themanuscript published by China Book Corporation in August,1909, and emended according tothe Hand-writing Diary of Revered Mr. Zeng, a facsimile published by the Students BookCompany of Taiwan in1965. The version published in1909with the deficiencies of the diaryin1839and1840were complemented based on the version of1965. All these arecomprehensive and reliable.This thesis can be divided into six charters. The first charter pays attention to the currentstudy of Zeng Guofan’s diary within journals, doctoral dissertations and monographs. Thesecond charter is about the general introduction of different versions of The Diary. And thispart will organize the main versions and characterize every one. The third charter is mainlyabout the collated edition about the part of the pursuit of learning in the Diary of Revered Mr.Zeng published by Overseas Chinese Press in2011. This version is composed of texts anddates, through which the errors are shown. The fourth charter is on the reading practice ofZeng on classical works, historical works, philosophical works and belles-lettres. At the endof this charter, the detailed information of those books appearing in the diary will be shown inthe form, which can help the reader further explain Zeng’s reading habits, which means thatdifferent methods are applied to different books. Based on the former charter, the fifth charteris about Zeng’s attitude and approaches towards reading. Summing the fifth charter, the sixthone is talking about Zeng’s theory of the pursuit of learning. Though the study of the Diary ofZeng Guofan, we can have a all-side comprehension of Zeng’s reading theory and readingmethods, so that it is significant to write a paper like this in this field. And it will also provideadvice about how to read and what to read for the generations following, and make it moreconvenient for other researchers.
