Play theory is an important part of Zhang Xuemen’s early childhood education thoughts. On the basis of absorption foreign advanced education ideas and Chinese excellent traditional culture, through continuous modification and improvement in practice, Zhang Xuemen formed a suitable age play thought system, which has the important enlightenment to our kindergarten play theory and practice. Because of his research across the continent and Taiwan, his preschool education thoughts have not received due attention. With the continuous reform of society and education, Zhang Xuemen’s preschool normal education and kindergarten behavior curriculum has gradually attracted the attention of the academic circles, and becomes a research hotpot. But through the existing research results, there is important historical value and modern significance of Zhang Xuemen’s play theory, which little people studies on it in-depth and doesn’t reflect its value. On Zhang Xuemen’s play theory analysis, summarizing, mining and utilization of beneficial ingredients in his thoughts, and to carry forward this is not only to inherit the legacy of preschool education in china, it’s also the inner requirement of current china’s preschool education reform.This study focuses on summarizing the contents and characteristics of Zhang Xuemen’s play theory; the main purpose is through mining his thought’s modern significance to solve today’s infant education theory and practice problems, to promote the growth and development of children in china and the formation of Chinese preschool play theory system. Firstly, starting from the background and basis of Zhang Xuemen’s play theory, points out that the trend of education developing, the surging domestic social reality calling for a new generation of early childhood education, the edification of Zhang Xuemen’s hometown geography and humanities are all creating conditions for the formation of his thoughts. Dewey, Montessori and Frobel, Tao Xingzhi and other educators provide theoretical bases for the formation of Zhang Xuemen’s play thoughts. While his personal learning experiences and four stages of education experiments provide a practical basis for his play thoughts formation. Secondly, starting from the logical starting point of Zhang Xuemen’s play thought system, summed up his play thoughts, which include advocating new play concept based on practice; to explore and construct Chinese scientific kindergarten play curriculum; developing educational value and economic Chinese play equipment; establish play guidance method of "respect children"; mining and utilization of folk resources; advocating developing good habits in the plays the six aspects of content. His play theory features are well versed in both Chinese and western thought, paying attention to the localization; perceptive, advancing with the times; the courage to practice, to explore. Finally, make objective evaluation and enlightenment on Zhang Xuemen’s play theory. The play theory established the position of play in kindergarten teaching; use life as the base of play; respect the spirit of the play with "children as the main body". The inspiration of the play theory to today’s infant education theory and practice include the following four aspects:the organic integration of play and teaching; pay attention to the value of incidental matter, make plan and flexibility combined; kindergarten should main direct experience, pay attention to the value of life; building science, Chinese kindergarten play system should combine Chinese conditions and era.
