Collaborative innovation, as a newly technological innovation paradigm, its impact on the society is catching more and more public attention. The university-industry collaboration as an important form of collaborative innovation, in reality, has been widely used. Now industry-university collaboration has established preliminary mechanisms, which not only reduce R&D costs and risk, enhance R&D capacity, but also increase the efficiency of the industrialization of universities’scientific and technological achievements to enable the universities to play a greater role in the economic development. However, with the further development of university-industry cooperation, the factors constraint the innovation performance are also increasingly prominent. But the main factors which domestic scholars put attention on are the features of cooperation and collaboration process characteristics, that is, influence of the distance factors on the performance of U-I cooperation have not yet started. Therefore, this research studies the impact of technological and geographical distance on U-I cooperative innovation. Specifically, technological distance refers to the distance in the technological space of two organizations.Based on the relative theoretical analysis, we examine the effects of technological and geographical distance on U-I collaboration in the year of2009-2011by using a patent data of12universities and340firms. We use the number of joint-patent to measure the value of U-I collaborative innovation performance. The results suggest that the technological distance is positive related to the innovation outcomes, while geographical has a non-significant negative effect. Moreover, we compare the empirical results of different regions, differences are observed. Technological distance’s positive effect:eastern region>central region>western region>northeast region, in addition, geographical distance’s negative effect is significant in central region and western region, but not significant in eastern region and northeast region.
