The culture of Huizhou martial arts refers to all material and spiritual productsrelated to martial arts in the form of martial arts skills in the huizhou region, includingthe use of artifacts, social customs, inheriting system, spiritual and cultural connotationsand so on. The distinguished huizhou martial arts culture is our precious spiritual wealth, but the serious imbalances between "civil and military" are given by the era and needsour face-to-face confrontation. The lack of enough attention to huizhou martial artsculture has caused a huge loss in understanding huizhou martial arts and its culturalfeatures, so the investigation of its distribution, research of its culture characteristic hasimportant significance. This thesis has used the method of documents and materials, questionnaireinvestigation, expert interview method, comparative method, logic analysis and otherresearch methods to analyze the present distribution and cultural characteristics ofhuizhou martial arts. The study has showed:First, huizhou is seperated into6counties inherited with21punching styles, andthe distribution of martial arts is more dense. Among them, most of the punching stylesare distributed in Shexian County and Huangshan city. Shexian County has18kinds ofstyles, accounting for30%of the total amount, while huangshan city has13kinds ofpunching styles, accounting for22%of the total number. The rest are distributed, indescending order, in Qimenxian County, Jixixian County, Yixian County, HiuningCounty, and Wuyuanxian County. In the second place, analyzing from the distribution scale, tai chi and traditionalmartial arts of Huizhou has a relatively wide distribution. Of which Young’s tai chi styleand Chinese catalpa are the most widely distributed, Chen’s tai chi style, Bandenghuaand belt dance are also widespread, with only a few areas without distribution. Thirdly, after analyzing the traditional huizhou martial arts culture, here comes tothe following conclusion:(1)from the level of physical technology, traditional huizhoumartial arts are low in boxing frame, raising the legs, and emphasize on defence. It startswith self-defense, emphasizes the characteristics of hitting other first. Since the mainpurpose is self-defence, Huizhou practitioners do not have the habit of carryingweapons at ordinary times, so they often pick up anything that is available when facingforce. In addition, during the heyday of Huizhou martial arts culture, it is rich inliterature with a lot of talented people, by contrast, modern martial arts is a bit lonely.(2) From the perspective of the system of cultural forms, huizhou practitioners wouldmake a fist with both hands, and step backwards in order to show respect to each other.Practitioners stick to conduct, and instead of showing themselves off through martialarts, they advocate civil; Inheritance system still exist in the past clan features.(3)fromthe perspective of the psychological value level of cultural forms, Huizhou people takepractice in martial arts from the beginning of guarding their house and family. The word"guard" is stressed throughout the pursuit of value of martial arts, and mixed with theidea of neo-confucianism, evolving the thought of "the ritual","filial piety" further intoan important content of martial arts, and the sense of "belong" and "close" ae alsoblended in the spirit of martial arts under such special geographical environment andhumane environment of Huizhou.Fourthly, the introduction and reception of the outer punching styles itself hasshowed the cultural characteristics of Huzhou culture of martial arts. The principle of"guard first, less attacking" has marked the outer punching from the very start. It isshowed that this impact on traditional huizhou punching isn’t deep and the range is notwide, mainly on the external action implements level, without any influence on theshaking of Huzhou people’s value. However, Huizhou foreign practiser are deeply andlargely affected by huizhou traditional practiser, reflecting both on the external actionlevel and its intrinsic value. In addition, different practitioners show the mutualinfluence to different degrees. Those who have the foundation of huizhou traditionalmartial arts practicing outside punches, tends to have a huge and long influence, andhave significant changes in the external actions and intrinsic value. While those without the foundation when practicing, they shows long and aging impact, the influence issmall, and the intrinsic value may be reflected in more levels.
