Badminton wins popular fondness for its unique charm against the backdrop ofextensive mass fitness activities in great vigor by taking the advantage of being thedominant event among traditional Chinese sports events. It is one of the favorite eventsamong university students with its increasing popularity. To combine the physicaleducation with lifetime physical exercise and to promote the nationwide fitness program,most of universities have offered various optional courses of physical education insuccession, with the universities in Jiangsu Province of no exception. To promote thereform and development in the teaching of physical education in universities, it is ofhigh necessity to probe deep into the current situation of teaching and learningbadminton sports as an optional course in higher education in Jiangsu Province.This paper adopts different research methods such as reference to documentliterature, questionnaire survey, mathematical statistics and logical analysis and so forth.It starts with the current situation of teaching in ten of universities in Jiangsu Provinceand analyses in depth the teaching staffing,content, method and environment as well asthe the assessment and then the corresponding advice is made. The research outcomeshows:Firstly, students in partial universities are enthusiastic about learning badmintonsports as their course and showing right attitude. The motivation for their learning varies.However, their technical foundation for the class is ubiquitously low.Secondly, the structure of teachers for badminton courses is relatively proper inpartial universities in Jiangsu Province and most of the teachers are young andmiddle-aged. Nevertheless, few teachers are highly educated and with high work title,resulting in insufficiency of teaching experience and the capacity to conduct scientificresearch. Thirdly, the teaching goals for partial universities in Jiangsu Province basicallyserve the guideline of putting health first and pursuing lifetime physical education.The teachers are basically able to proceed with the course by following the syllabus.The practicality of the textbook is low.Fourthly, partial universities in Jiangsu Province focus on the techniques andtactics in playing badminton and attach little importance to psychological traits andsports common sense. Teaching means and methods are not diversified enough. Thecontent of the course can meet the needs of students basically. The weight proportion ofassessment is relatively reasonable.Lastly, the standard courts for badminton sports in partial universities of JiangsuProvince are only a few. Meanwhile, too many classes and students take the samecourse at the same time, causing a safety risk. It is to the detriment of badmintonteaching and learning to a certain degree.
