| This essay provides an investigation and an analysis into the present situation of the optional course of martial arts in Jiangsu ordinary universities by way of document reference,questionnaire and statistics. It also presents appropriate countermeasures for its improvement and development. The research result shows: 1. Optional course of martial arts, one of the important teaching items in physical education of ordinary universities, plays a unique role and has a unique value in college education. 2. Owing to the insufficiency of the teaching reforms on it, the present teaching situation of martial arts course is not very optimistic and it lags behind the development of society and college education. As a result, the central problem of the martial arts course reform has been shifted to further its teaching reform,grope for the way and methods to realize the teaching aims,compile the high-quality textbooks; to make up a whole set of scientific,proper,and systematic teaching plan and teaching syllabus. What's more, the most urgent problem of this course is to supply it with sufficient,qualified teaching faculty, which has also become the guarantee for the success of its reform and development. 3. The teaching evaluation system is not very effective. Its function and significance has not been paid much attention, therefore, the teaching evaluation items should be omnidirectional, the way and content of evaluation should be diversified, the evaluation process should be systematic.
