Hengyang, named Hengzhou in ancient times with2000-year history, is one of theimportant birthplaces of Huxiang culture. It is in the north of Moun. HengShan in Nanyue, winded around by Xiangjiang River. As a north-south traffic fort with unique geographicaladvantage that the ancient militarists must fight for, it is well known as “Feng Shui Ji Di”(literally “a valuable place with a good geomantic omen”). Xiangshui River (Xiangjiang River),Zhengshui River and Leishui River meet there. At the junction stands an over-1000-year oldacademy named Shi Gu Academy, which is full of the history of “Culture of Hengyang”.Through some research ideas, such as reading history, appreciating landscape, enlightening and inheriting culture, the author of this paper comes to understand, learn, exploreand study the poetry, articles and books about the history and culture of Shi Gu Academywhich are left by the ancients, then understands why the Academy are so and its culturalconnotation covering the essence of quality, action and research, which makes the futuregenerations think, benefits them all life and promote the cultural construction of Hengyangcity. This paper is divided into four parts. The first part, by tracing back to the history of Shi Gu Academy, expounds its experiencein different periods that it has gone through a rise and fall process like a phoenix rising fromthe ashes, successively including construction, development, exploration, innovation, decline, destruction in the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, reconstruction and culturerecreation. The second part interprets the material and spiritual elements of Chinese ancient gardenculture by studying natural landscape (it includes the hills, water, construction, plants, etc.) andhumanistic landscape (it includes couplets, poems, cliff carving, myths, legends, celebritystories, etc.) of Shi Gu Academy. The third part emphasizes that the academy culture and garden culture which ShiguAcademy shows belongs to Huxiang culture. They are essential parts of China’s culture. Because the Academy makes great academic contributions, educates people, collects lots ofscriptures and inherits culture, it has a prominent status in Chinese culture history. Splendid isthe Landscape of Shigu Academy! What it leaves in the world are not only the “Eight Sights”,but also the ways that the “Seven Sages” and many scholars related to the Academy deal withothers and gain knowledge in when they improve themselves, manage families and countries. The fourth part shows that in the construction of modern landscape culture and in the paceof strengthening city by culture, we should inherit the essence of Confucianism, Taoism, andZen of China’s garden culture and take on new things as well. It means that under theconstruction and development of regional modern city, we should present the unique charm ofthe Academy, promote the academic exchange of “Shi Gu Forum” by culture, create a livablemodern cultural landscape square by culture and lead “a Roots-seeking Tour of HuxiangCulture” by the culture. Meanwhile, we should show the cultural connotation of the Academy, bring forth the new through the old, carry forward Huxiang culture and develop the time valueof the Academy.
