In mid-1980s, the United States first applied a new engineering project managementmode, named Partnering mode. With the advantage of improving quality, shorteningconstruction period, lowering cost, and reducing conflicts, as well as improving relationsbetween the parties involved in the engineering project, Partnering mode has been applied toengineering projects in the United States, Britain, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. While in mainland China, due to the imperfection of economic system and thedistemperedness of legal system, Partnering mode cannot be used in projects alone as a projectmanagement mode, only can be used combined with other project management modes as agood management concept. Studying the management mechanism of engineering projectbased on Partnering mode, deeply understanding the practice mechanism of Partnering modecan provide necessary theoretical basis for its successful application to engineering projects inmainland China.Management mechanism of Partnering mode include trust and cooperation mechanism, communication and coordination mechanism, incentive and restraint mechanism, riskmanagement mechanism and conflict management mechanism. First, this paper introducessome basic theories about Partnering mode, including its classification, main body, criticalsuccess factors and Partnering charter etc. Then it specifically analyses these five managementmechanisms, introduces related theories, studies their operation mechanisms and structuresrelevant models. At last, the full paper content is summarized, and the application ofPartnering mode to engineering project in mainland China is prospected.
