With the increasingly fierce market competition, enterprises are confronted withmore and more severe survival challenges today. Mastering the core competitivenessand gaining competitive advantage turns into a magic weapon of enterprises’ success. As an important topic in strategic management research field, the configuration ofresources is considered to be the key to enhance firm performance and maintaincompetitive advantage. How enterprises obtain and maintain competitive advantagethrough resources configuration becomes the focus of attention of scholars andbusiness people.Based on resource-based theory and configuration theory, starting from theperspective of mutual configuration of innovation ability and customer resourcesaffecting firm performance, the paper disaggregates innovation ability and customerresources into depth and breadth dimensions, forming fours different resourcesconfiguration decisions. Then, selecting panel data of2006~2011A-share listedcompanies of China’s IT and manufacturing industry as research sample, the paperconducts an empirical study about effects of innovation ability and customer resourcesconfiguration decisions on firm performance and performance variability. On this basis, combined with the characteristics of environment dynamics, this paper further discussthe effects of innovation ability and customer resources configuration decisions on firmperformance and performance variability under environment dynamics. The research results show that deep customer-broad innovation configurationdecision has significant positive impact on performance and negative impact onperformance variability; Deep innovation-broad customer configuration decision hassignificant positive impact on performance and negative impact on performancevariability; Resources diversification configuration decision has significant negativeimpact on both performance and performance variability; Resources concentrationconfiguration decision has significant positive impact on both performance andperformance variability. In the case of considering environment dynamics, Theenvironment dynamics positively moderate the positive relationship between deepcustomer-broad innovation configuration decision and performance, and the negativerelationship between deep customer-broad innovation configuration decision andperformance variability; Similarly, the environment dynamics positively moderate thepositive relationship between deep innovation-broad customer configuration decision and performance, and the negative relationship between deep innovation-broadcustomer configuration decision and performance variability; The negative moderatingeffect on the negative relationship between resources diversification configurationdecision and performance is not significant, and the positive moderating effect on thenegative relationship between resources diversification configuration decision andperformance variability is significant; Finally, the negative moderating effect on thepositive relationship between resources concentration configuration decision andperformance is significant, and the positive moderating effect on the positiverelationship between resources concentration configuration decision and performancevariability is not significant.
