Usually, researches regarding environment problems focus on government and enterprise. As a matter of fact, scholars ignore that all the goods are ultimately consumed by residents. Therefore, we take the indirect emissions of carbon dioxide into consideration and analyze the relationship between pollution and income.Based on the EKC hypothesis, we demonstrate the importance of residents’ environmental protection wishes by analyzing mathematical models, which concludes that when the proportion of the additional revenue consumed by residents is less than the relative environmental protection effects, the per capita carbon emissions will decline with the rising per capita disposable income. In addition, we investigate carbon dioxide emissions of urban residents in China, and the emissions follow an inverse-N-shaped pattern relative to disposable income. The preference for clean environment hasn’t turn into practical environmental protection. Therefore, we suggest that setting up a low-carbon city should start from cultivating low-carbon residents. The change of consumption patterns will motivate the change of production methods, which is beneficial to form a environment—friendly social conduct.
