Hydraulic power tong is an oil drilling wellhead tool, be widely used for the string making-up and breaking-out in the marine, land drilling and workover operations. At present, although the traditional hydraulic power tongs can be applied to the most of diameter range rates, but it is required to be equipped with a plurality of teeth plate parts with different sizes in order to adapt to different pipe diameters, the replacement process is cumbersome, and the movement is too heavy and dangerous.In this paper, the basic structure and working mode between traditional hydraulic power tongs and iron roughneck, the fastening equipment mainstream in foreign were compared, the advantages and disadvantages of traditional hydraulic power tongs and iron roughneck were pointed out; The structure of ZQ216-80 new hydraulic power tong was designed and optimized, a new clamping mechanism was designed, can be applied all the pipe diameter of the drill pipe, and didn’t need jaw plate and other clamps; in the mobile mode, the telescopic arm mechanism of iron roughneck was combined, the hydraulic power tong can be moved safely and conveniently. The main designs and contents are as follows:(1)The structural defects and use problems of traditional hydraulic power tong were analyzed, the performance parameters of hydraulic power tong were selected, a new upper pliers clamping mechanism was designed based on the screw drive structure. The clamping range was improved; with the aid of mechanism kinematics theory, the structure of the upper and under pliers mechanism, the transmission system and the telescopic were optimized, the parameters of each mechanism were calculated to meet the design requirements, the efficiency of making-up and breaking-out were improved.(2)According to the requirements of each motion mechanism, the pressure of power system was determined, and the hydraulic control system of the whole system was designed; based on the theory of load composition and calculation of hydraulic cylinder, referenced hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic motor selection rules, the hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic motors and other hydraulic components of each motion mechanism were calculated and selected.(3)The kinematics models of quadruple closed notched gear transmission system and telescopic mechanism were established, based on the application of Hertz contact theory in calculating gear meshing contact force, the dynamic characteristics of the gear transmission system were studied; based on the theory of multi body system dynamics, the driving force of the telescopic boom under different conditions was analyzed, it provided theoretical reference for the calculation and selection of the telescopic arm hydraulic cylinder.(4)The static analysis of the key components U-shaped clamping bracket on upper pliers and pulley body of ZQ216-80 new hydraulic power tong were analyzed by Workbench ANSYS software, the stress and strain contour and the displacement contour were obtained, the reliability of the key components was verified.
