Iron roughneck is the connection tool for drilling rod and casing pipe. It has the characteristics of safety and manipuility. Now oil drilling platform uses hydraulic power tongs to perform the drilling and unloading process, However, during the work of iron roughneck, the unstable working performance and rotary buckle clamp slipping problems often appear.According to the above problem and function demands of the iron roughneck, this article carries out research on overall programs of iron roughneck, including structural design, hydraulic system design, kinematic theoretical calculations and kinetics analysis. What’s more, it carries on the stress and strain analysis of the key bearing parts and the commonly used components of the fatigue life is calculated as well. The main work includes the following sections:First of all, after analyzing each component of the iron roughneck, working principle and performance parameters, the modular design was done to the iron roughneck. Based on the optimization theory of the criterion optimization method, the structural optimization were designed for the case base, telescopic arm, the clamp pincerse and punch forceps; With the mechanism kinematic theory, the extreme positions of the spinner tongs at work was calculated; Using best cut diameter ratio principle, spinner roller was optimized. Installing each optimized module, final structure of the the iron roughneck takes shape.Secondly, the theoretically model of spinner clamp was analyzed with the rolling tribology principle. Regulated by design requirements, the spinner motor is selected from all kinds and performed parameter validation then; Based on calculating the clamping force that clamp and clamp buckle needed and the rule table referring to the hydraulic cylinder, the required cylinder pressure were calculated and the hydraulic cylinders achieving a reasonable choice; Through functional analysis on hydraulic components, the hydraulic system diagram was designed.The next sections involve building kinematic model of the iron roughneck, carrying on kinematic analysis and getting the iron roughneck’s kinematics curve, importing Spinner clamp model into analysis module by data interface, establishing the constraint relation of each component on the basis to dynamic and kinematic related theory. The simulation analysis of the model of the rotary button was realized and comparing with the theoretical results, it can verify the correctness of the design.Finally, importing the 3D model into workbench and by the static analysis over the dental plate, drill pipe joints and swivel clamp active arm, it gets stress strain contour of each components and verifies the reliability of the key stress components; By means of fatigue life analysis on vulnerable components’ tooth plate of iron roughneck, it verifies rationalities of the tooth plate structure and material selection and therefore provides a theoretical basis for the actual production of iron roughneck.
