Urban sprawl causes traffic jam everywhere in major cities worldwide, whichleads the inevitable tendency to explore underground space and construction of railtraffic network. This dissertation is written basing on studying and understanding ofreadily made researches and discovery that POE and research on people’s behavior isinsufficient in comparison with the high speed construction of underground subwaystation. Although some researchers concern about POE, the majority of them lack casestudy and quantitative evaluation. It is necessary to evaluate underground space in subway station basing onpeople’s behavior for the pursuit of human oriented design and exaltation ofefficiency of transfer between different lines. This dissertation focuses on this aim andputs forward quantitative method to analyze people’s behavior, thus to evaluateunderground transfer space in subway station. Questionnaire, picture taking, tracing, etc. have been used in this research, and SPSS is used for some statistic confirmation. The key point and innovation in this dissertation is to materialize people’s behavior, which is an abstract conception. Plan, section, time counting, node counting, distancemeasuring have been used to collect data, basing on a reliable evaluation system withseveral items and different weighs. According to this, every site can be scored among0-30to reflect its quality of transfer space design. After academic study, I use thismethod to do field work in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Nanjing, by this field work, the method put forward in this dissertation can be proved to be feasible and reliable.Academic study, together with field work, makes objective evaluation on transferspace underground in subway station area. The dissertation gives comparison withother revaluation methods together with advantages and disadvantages of itself. Thisresearch fills the gap in existing research by methods of quantitatively evaluatingpeople’s behavior in certain space. The evaluation theory, criterions, implementingconditions, implementing steps, and methods have been tested and optimized step bystep in case study. This dissertation also analyzes shortcomings and deficiencies inresearch and tries the best to explore and perfect the evaluating system.
