Recently, Buton Rock Asphalt (BRA) which was made in Indonesia gained much public concern for its exceptional performance, simple construction technoloy and reasonable price. The application of BRA is increasing in our country. However, the evaluation system of BRA modified asphalt and its mixture had not been formed. To some degree, it would limit BRA’s popularization and application. As to the test materials, modified asphalt was successfully prepared basing on penetration50asphalt with BRA modifier. The BRA content was5%to40%. This paper explored the performance of BRA modified bituminous from different perspectives, then determined the optimum mixing amount and evaluation indexes.The pavement performance of BRA modified bituminous was explored based on the conventional tests. The tests results indicated that high temperature performance, temperature susceptibility and aging resistant performance were improved. But low temperature performance was declined slightly at the same time. For making further research, it’s necessary to evaluate the performance of BRA modified asphalt mixture. Taking the synthesized performance into account, the optimum mixing amount of BRA was better determined as10%to30%.After the Superpave tests of BRA modified asphalt and base asphalt, the correlation between conventional and Superpave evaluation methods were analyzed. Both results showed that the high temperature performance, temperature susceptibility and anti-rutting performance of BRA modified asphalt were improved obviously with the increasing of BRA’s contents. On the other hand, the BRA modified asphalt could be used in the area where the temperature range is great, because the service temperature range of BRA modified asphalt was higher than base asphalt.Based on the dynamic mechanical analysis, this paper investigated the influence of temperature and load frequency on the rheological properties of BRA modified asphalt. All the tests were operated within the liner viscoelastic range. The complex modulus master curve covered the entire frequency range of engineering applications. The results provided a sufficient basis for comprehensive study of the viscoelastic behavior for BRA modified asphalt.In the last part of this thesis, the economic and social benefits of BRA were studied. The results showed that BRA modified asphalt could not only improve the pavement performance and service level but also fully reflect the people-oriented capabilities, meet the requirements of energy saving and environmental protection.
