Indonesia Buton Rock Asphalt (BRA) is an excellent asphalt modifier. In recent years, it attracted many people's attention because of it's outstanding performance, convenient construction and reasonable economy. But our country is lack of systemic and related technical specifications of BRA modified asphalt at present, therefore it's popularization and application are limited in a certain extent. So, in-depth study of the material composition, modified mechanism of BRA and modified asphalt's performance is necessary. Accordingly this thesis adopted a lot of laboratory experiments to research the BRA's material properties.1) The method of combining the centrifugal extractor with the rotating evaporator was adopted to separate mineral material and pure asphalt of BRA. Point at fine mineral and trichloroethylene's interference to the extraction, studied on the improvement of extraction methods, put forward some methods to remove the powder by settling, using vibration vacuum box and sand core funnel, and to remove the trichloroethylene by increasing distillation's temperature properly. According to the characteristics of BRA, the extraction method was improved.2) Through the detection and analysis of original BRA material's density, asphalt content, particle size distribution, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope, obtained that original BRA material fitted Indonesian's standard, and the mineral was composed of basic calcite and mica, combined closely with asphalt. Through the analysis of separated BRA particles's mineral composition, particle size, specific surface area, obtained that mineral was high in CaCO3 and SiO2, it's particle size and specific surface area were similar to powder. Lastly, separated pure asphalt were analyzed by some microscopic tests such as four component analysis, elemental analysis, molecular weight analysis, infrared spectrum analysis, SEM analysis, thermal analysis and so on, then studied it's performance and compared with the matrix asphalt and modified asphalt, analysed the modified mechanism. Obtained that pure asphalt of BRA had more asphaltene and the ring structure, the colloidal's molecular weight of pure asphalt was high. BRA had a high content of heteroatoms, the bond energy and thermal decomposition temperature of functional group was high, but BRA's mobility was poor. The results showed that pure asphalt of BRA can improve original asphalt's high temperature stability, aging resistance ability and adhesion, reduce the temperature sensitivity. But BRA's low temperature performance was poor.3) Through the experimental study on pure asphalt of BRA, modified asphalt of BRA and matrix asphalt by penetration grade and PG grade tests, the results showed that two different tests's regular was similer, and pure asphalt of BRA can improve matrix asphalt's temperature sensitivity, high temperature stability, anti-deformation ability and aging resistance ability, but it's low temperature performance was poor.In summery, the results of the research on the comprehensive properties of BRA and its modified asphalt in the thesis can provide the reference for the further popularization and application of BRA.
