China has already embarked on a hi-speed urbanization period. The tremendous population transfer results in the dramatic increase of city structure, thusly promoting the rapid development of railway transportation level and railway construction. Consequently, the contradiction between city construction and transportation development becomes increasingly sharp. The land-use structure, transportation network, and public environment of the railway passenger station no longer follow the development of the new city. Based on the relationship between city and transportation, this paper studies the front area of the railway passenger station and relevant theories of transformation and renovation, summarizes the current situation and existing issues of the railway passenger station in China and finally puts forward the innovation strategies of the railway passenger station, i.e., traffic integration, function complexity, and space three-dimension. In the research of the city design renovation of Hohhot railway station area, this paper adopts methods of case analysis, theory research method, questionnaire survey, and field survey method, achieving the renovation practice of the Hohhot railway station area based on this theoretical foundation. As to the city land-use structure, this paper adjusts the areas for residential and commercial use through the analysis of the construction quality of the area, increases the traffic area and public green area properly, and integrates the six functional areas. Hence, an abundant city space is formed, and the situation of irrational land-use structure of the front area of the Hohhot railway station gets modified.As to urban transportation, by adjusting the network structure, urban slow-traffic system, location and amount of pedestrian crossing facilities of the region, and designing the traffic organization flow lines and three-dimensional traffic space of the front-station square, this paper improves the traffic disorder in Hohhot railway station, especially the front-station square. By means of the landscape design, green facilities layout, and ventilation lighting design of the Hohhot front-station area, the paper highlights the two crucial image sights and so the symbolic image landscape of Hohhot takes shape.
