A landside transportation system that serves large airport is studied, which usespassenger transport service level to evaluate performance of transportation at bothaggregate and disaggregate. This thesis first introduces classification of major hubairports, and then selects ten airports as case study based on these airports’ size, geographic, economical, and location characteristics. By analyzing these landside airports’transportation systems functions and development of each passenger travel modeincluding price, travel time, convenience, comfort and reliability, the thesis presents sevencommonly used travel modes to and from airport; railway, subway, express light rail, private vehicles and public transit including service shuttle. The factors that impactpassenger transport service level of one mode landside traffic are like capacity of onetrain, the grid frequency, the rate of full passengers, travel time, travel price, delay, comfort and transfer distance.Seven key performance evaluation indexes are developedby the study. They are capacity, service frequency, demand-to-capacity ratio, travel time, cost, waiting time, comfortableness and transfer distance. The weighting factor for eachindex is developed by the layer method. This performance evaluation model is used toanalyze the selected airport landside passenger transportation service performance foreach individual travel mode. Considering difference in trip purpose (business vs.pleasure), the thesis develops different passenger service evaluation criteria. Lastly, theperformance influential factors are analyzed. The passenger transport service level of landside transportation systems reflectsairport productivity. The higher passenger transport service level indicates the betterlandside traffic system design. Through case studies, this thesis research demonstrates theapplicability of the performance evaluation methodology for landside transportationsystem.
