In order to improve the deteriorating environment, Energy EfficiencyDesign Index (EEDI) has become a judgment of the level of energyefficiency standards for the new ships. To meet the EEDI requirements avariety of measures should be taken, including reducing the velocity, application of the new-type ships and other energy-saving measures etc.For the containership, high speed is one of the main characters, and theproportion of the wave resistance is large at a high speed. Thereforereduction of the wave resistance at a high speed can lower the EEDIeffectively. Pentamaran is one of the latest ship types in recent years. Theexisting studies, including both domestic and international research, showthat it has an excellent performance and broad application perspective, especially its excellent stability and rapidity. So it can be applied for thecontainership to meet the EEDI requirements.Based on the previous studies, the conceptual design of a containership, which can load at least3100TEU with a speed of more than22.5kn,is finished with the application of Pentamaran in this dissertation, hopingto promote this kind of research on the pentamaran in our country. Themain work is as follows:1. The principal dimensions are determined. The key point focuses onoptimizing the principal dimensions of the main hull, and the sponsons canbe decided in accordance with the appropriate proportion to the main hull. The range of these dimensions is based on the statistic data of containerships and pentamarans. When selecting the better design, the lightshipweight and effective power are the optimization objective. And theeffective power of each design is estimated by HOLTROP and series60. 2. General arrangement and hull form lines are designed. The hullform lines of the main hull and four sponsons are built in thethree-dimensional software CATIA. And the overall arrangement isdivided into three parts: the optimization of layout for the four sponsons, cabin arrangement and container arrangement. Finally, the generalarrangement is drawn in AutoCAD.3. Performance computations are finished, including hydrostatic table, initial stability, large angle stability (GZ curve), and the effective powercalculation. The results show that the design has an excellent stability andrapidity.4. The EEDI of both the mono-hull container ship and the pentamaranare calculated. It turns out that after the application of the pentamaran, theEEDI is reduced by13%, which can suffice the second stage of theenvironment protection requirements. This shows that compared to theconventional ship, pentamaran can effectively reduce the EEDI value, andthus meets the environmental requirements more easily.
