Since the16th century, some of the European countries have been dreaming of finding a convenient way through the Arctic Ocean to eastern countries. The exploration of the route faded into dreariness because of its lack of commercial value and the limit of nature condition. However, in recent20years, due to the global warming, the melting of Arctic Sea Ice has been accelerating and the area of the ice has been getting smaller. The exploration of the Arctic route has become the research focus once again. The Arctic Ocean is a bond connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean with an area of14.75million square kilometers. With winding coastline and numerous islands, the Arctic Ocean possesses abundant natural and mineral resources. The exploration of the arctic route will certainly bring enormous influence to the economic development of our country. What’s more, the voyage from the harbor in north China to Europe and North America will be shortened compared with the traditional route. This will bring a decrease in the cost of traveling and an increase in economic benefit. Some of the scientists also predict that there will be years when Arctic Ocean is ice-free during summer in the next30years and the Arctic route will become true. This article takes the northeast route as the research object. Firstly this article concludes the history and current situation of the northeast route and summarizes the characteristics of the route by collecting and analyzing the studies of the scholars and organizations at home and abroad. Secondly, this article analyses the differences between the northeast route and the north route. Then this article summarizes the information of the five key sea areas in the northeast route including the Barents Sea, the Kara Sea, the Laptev Sea, the East Siberian Sea and the Chukchi Sea. This article concludes the hydrometeor elements and water conditions of the key areas and analyses the risks considering the hydrometeor elements and water conditions. Finally this article focuses on the requirements of safe navigation including the safety of crew, the safety of ship and the sea ice monitoring, the shipping safety information and the assistant navigation facilities. Then this article provides suggestions referring to the experiences of arctic voyagers. Our research focuses on the hydrometeor elements and water conditions of the northeast route and the potential risks in safety navigation. Then our research provides suggestions on safety navigation and how to guarantee the safety during the navigation on northeast route.
