With the rapid development of mountainous highway in China, the construction of the tunnel is rapidly increasing. Tunnel lighting system is an important part of the normal operation for the tunnel. The traditional tunnel lighting control system is incomplete. It not only causes the waste of energy, but also maybe lead to unsafe factors to harm traffic safety in the tunnel due to the uneven distribution of light. Therefore, designing a reasonable tunnel lighting control system is particularly important.This paper analyzes the main problems of the conventional tunnel lighting systems and designs a tunnel lighting control system based on PLC according to the characteristics of tunnel lighting. The paper first designs the hardware architecture system. Control system is divided into three parts: PC, PLC, tunnel lights and other field devices. Using Lonworks field bus based on power line carrier to communicate with lights and to reduce system wiring costs. Detailed flow of system network configurations and data structures stored is designed. Introducing specific methods to control lamps and status inquiry. Software design focuses on the design of PLC software module of tunnel lighting control system, and then the flow chart of the various software modules are shown respectively. Specific protocol format for each module are given as well. PLC ladder language is used to programme according to the system functions. C hanges in data can be seen when PLC memory is real-time monitoring.Then, this paper designs incremental tunnel lighting control algorithm based on the characteristics of the PLC.Taking Wenzhou Jiangbei Ridge right tunnel as an example, the control algorithm is utilized to adjust brightness of lamps and lanterns according to the actual brightness and demand the relationship between the brightness in the hole. Then the paper analysises the energy saving of tunnel lighting systems after dimming. Finally, a experimental platform is builded and the whole system is dimmed.
