| Urban intersection is the joint of the road network where different types of traffic participants from all directions converge, interweave and evacuate. It is the peculiar functions of intersections, widespread participation and complicated operation that contribute to its important role. However, currently we lack reasonable traffic design of intersections and effective traffic organization and do not have a comprehensive evaluation method and indicator in this aspect. As a result, the intersection is not able to release all the space and time resources and congestions increases instead of deceasing with traffic accident rates remaining high. What’s worse, partial traffic problems concerning intersections(congestion or accidents) will affect the surrounding roads which eventually bring out bad influence on the entire city road network and people’s living quality as well as the economic development of the nation. Therefore, a suitable integrated traffic design of intersection based on the feature of our nation and corresponding evaluation method are in bad need.This paper puts forward a comprehensive evaluation indicator of intersections – traffic efficiency on account of the characteristics of the participants in city intersections and the methods for an integrated traffic design of intersections, aiming at creating an effective intersection by means of designing.Based on related literature review, this study chooses the most common and typical intersection as the research object according to characteristics and application scope of various categories of intersections in our nation. Single traffic characteristics of pedestrians, non-motor vehicles and motor vehicles and characteristics of various traffic flow as well as the interference characteristics of mixed traffic flow are analyzed in this paper.On this basis, the author proposes that the traffic efficiency of intersection can function as an integrated evaluation indicator of typical intersections. According to analysis of traffic efficiency models, the measuring indicator of traffic efficiency of intersections can be summarized as: traffic capacity of intersections, delays at intersections and queue length of vehicles at intersections.An integrated traffic design of intersections is put forward based on analyzing and summarizing previous intersections design researches and the principle of “temporal and spatial integrationâ€, aiming at releasing maximal resource limit. This method integrates space design and time design, thus creating interdependence as well as mutual restraint, in order to make the design reasonable and scientific and avoid the emergence of a mismatch.Finally, this research takes the transformation of an intersection in Tongling, Anhui province as an example and formulates a transformation plan through integrated traffic design combining the theories and methods in this paper. The traffic efficiency rate increases by 40% through calculation and a large amount of time and space resource is released which prove the feasibility of the method in practice. |
