A plane intersection is an important component of urban roads, and is also the bottleneck of the urban road network. The probability of occurrence of congestion and road traffic accidents at plane intersections is much greater than the road section, affecting the entire road, and even entire city road network functions. Rational design of intersections affects the safety of urban roads, traffic capacity and the capacity of the entire road network. Reasonable traffic organization and channelization design can make the investing less but achieve the aim of better utilization of time and space resources, and tap the potential role of road traffic capacity. It can be described as the most cost-effective measures in urban road construction.This paper analyzes the three main traffic flow, pedestrians, non-motorized vehicles and vehicle’s travel characteristics involved in the plane intersections, and the characteristics of the traffic conflict under mixed traffic. On this basis, discusses the principles and methods of intersection traffic organization, discusses the characteristics and methods of channelization design and proposes applicability of the different methods.In view of the unclear provision of design parameters about maw-shaped diversion island setting left-turn lane in China’s current specification, it is divided into four functional sections of transition section, draw-in section, deceleration section and mooring section. Proposes the section length depending on the design speed to ensure traffic safety and comfort; in order to increase applicability of maw-shaped diversion island setting left-turn lane, proposes setting conditions of odd lane road and methods to set maw-shaped diversion island in a curve more road such as mountainous or river more road; refer to the methods to research the length of transition section of maw-shaped diversion island setting left-turn lane, determine the length of the transition section to widened import channel setting right turn lane; obtain the widened length to widened import channel setting right turn lane in using stopping sight distance principle; verify the application results of left, right turn channelization optimal design based on the VISSIM simulation model established by data collected through the field; give the diversion road width depending on the vehicles or combination of vehicles to right turn diversion Island and diversion road design.Based on Schematic plan, the paper describes the signs and markings in designing of maw-shaped diversion island setting left-turn lane, widens import channel setting right turn lane, right turn diversion island and diversion road,proposes issues that need attention in traffic engineering design to ensure traffic safety and allow vehicles to follow.The paper can provide a reference to improve the urban road plane intersection channelization and diversion island design.
