Turpan is a historical city with rich cultural heritage on the Ancient Silk Road, and was once one of the Central Western Cities on politics, economy and culture. With the development of country’s western development strategy and the new rural construction, there has great changes on the local people’s living standards and living conditions. However, its rapid development leads to imitate city construction models blindly, and abandons the traditional techniques. It has not only lost the local characteristics, but also brought new challenges to local ecological civilization. Therefore, it is necessary to instruct the locals and set up the view of ecological sustainable development correctly. It is worth exploring the question how to ease local trend of ecological deterioration and creat local adaptable modle of residential construction in use of local nature, climate, human factors.Firstly, the paper starts from the analyses on local climate environment, included local solar radiation, air temperature, air humidity, wind and precipitation. Then it is concluded what are local optimum passive design strategies by the climate-design method, and it is briefly summarized what are local climate-adaptability characteristics according to local climate.Secondly, according to the research on traditional dwellings and new-built ones,it summarizes some adaptable characteristics rooted in traditional dwellings. It is respectively from the village planning, courtyard space, building space, architectural details, mainly focusing on the relationship between the indoor thermal environment with its four aspects, meanwhile there is some inadequate aspects in traditional dwellings found such as indoor air, indoor lighting; The new-built dwellings, are superior to the traditional ones in such aspects of spatial layout, interior ventilation, indoor lighting, but there are also shortcomings in five aspects : community vitalitylack; inadequate local-lifestyle considerations; uneconomic-construction; land resources waste; overheated indoor thermal environment in summer.Thirdly, the paper focuses on the indoor thermal environment test about the traditional dwellings and the new-built ones in spring, respectively from the indoor air temperature, air humidity, mean radiant temperature, temperature on the surface of wall and other aspects.According to the contrast between adobe and bricks, it is found that the traditional dwellings with adobe walls is superior to the new-built brick ones in the heat storage and humidity performance; meanwhile, establish models similar with the traditional and new-built dwellings and then simulate indoor thermal environmental in typical seasons, and find further characteristics about indoor thermal environment in traditional and new-built dwellings. Finally, summarize local climate-adaptability characteristics from local Earth dwellings, and apply conclusions that are summarized from premier research about traditional and new-built dwellings to the actual update residential designs. Some climate adaptation design principles of are presented that how to retain local residential, respectively from the village planning, courtyard space, building space, architectural details;meanwhile, based on the design principles, design different renewal programs to improve building indoor environment and meet the development trend of the local rural life, and it also embodies the philosophy of the low-carbon energy during the new rural construction, and achieve the comprehensive goals of economic, social and environmental benefits.
