With the rapid improvement of urban motorization in China, motor vehicle traffic has brought convenient lifestyle. However, many problems were caused at the same time, such as environment pollution and traffic congestion while bringing etc. In this context, non-motorized traffic has begun to draw attention for its convenience, environmental protection and health promotion. At present, the non-motorized traffic system research focus on the concept and the relevant content of traffic development in China. The research is limited to meso-planning or micro-planning, and concentrate on the big cities. But medium-sized cities with rapid spatial expansion still lack of study on non-motorized traffic system. The integrity of non-motorized traffic system construction is rarely involved either. Dawukou begun to transform the economies in recent years, and put trade and tourism as one of its key development industries, so it have higher demand requirements to the non-motorized traffic environment. However, Problems have emerged with the non-motorized traffic system of Dawukou during the process of the city’s rapid development, which mainly reflected in discontinuous system, communication difficulty with urban land-use, low density and inappropriate width of non-motorized road etc. To guide the urban transportation orderly development, the paper tended to use oriented discussion under the guidance of systematology, to study the non-motorized traffic system characteristics of Dawukou and propose planning strategy, in order to provide reference for Dawukou and similar cities.The paper firstly made a review and summary of non-motorized system’s related theories and practices home and abroad. Secondly, based on analysis of the case study, the paper with a systematic method for guidance, sorted out existed questions of non-motorized system in Dawukou from three sides: hierarchical system; functional structure and total space. Furthermore, taking this as the guidance, the paper made intense research for the non-motorized traffic system characteristics. Finally, this paper tried to build planning strategy for non-motorized system of Dawukou based on problem analysis and characteristic research.
