The relation between architectural department hall(ADH) and architectural education distinguishes ADH from other educational architectures. ADH is one of the key educational resources which assists the practical education. The concept of education is an important factor that influences the space of ADH. The spatial transformation of ADH reflects the development of educational activities and the goal of education. With the expansion of architectural education and the educational transition to open education, the old ADHs cannot meet the needs of open education due to their closed and limited space. In recent years,various architecture schools reconstructed their old ADHs based on their own situations and characteristics.This thesis first generalized eastern and western modern architectural education and the development of ADHs, pointed out the limitation of traditional education of architecture and the trends of the concept of modern education. Then the spatial characteristics and existing issues of traditional ADHs were summarized via case studies. In order to solve the issues of traditional ADHs, several factors have been considered to reconstruct ADHs: 1. The reconstruction of internal and external space must reflect the new concept of modern education. 2. The reconstruction of ADHs must meet the general reconstruction principles. 3.The reconstruction must balance the engineering standard and artistic characteristics.The strategy of external reconstruction is discussed in the following three sections: 1. the creation of open space with natural harmony; 2.the design of open space with multiple external joints;3. the refresh of the external image with innovation. Meanwhile, the strategy of internal reconstruction stressed on the spatial functionalization, the spatial reconstruction and the creation of local atmosphere. In the end, a case study of the reconstruction of the ADH at South China University of Technology was analyzed to prove the arguments in previous sections. The reconstructive strategy based on open education is one of the strategies that can solve the mismatch between the development of traditional ADHs and spatial usage, and it provides a good example for future reconstructions of ADHs.
