With the rapid development of China’s economics, vehicle population keeps increasingly going up, and this brings huge amount of useless tires to be coped with. Considering the environmental harm caused by burning or burying, recycling becomes the first processing choice. Useless tires can be ground down into additive agent, and this has become one application trend. Also, there exist many handling problems for useless plastic, especially for recycling. Using plastic as additive agent for asphalt can avoid those problems existed in other industry.Because the two agents are not easy to stably coexist in asphalt, few studies have shown the results of using useless plastic and rubber as a composite additive agent for modifying asphalt. For the common SBS modified asphalt, the chemical synthesis process goes against environmental protection.So, using useless rubber and plastic into asphalt,if they can coexist stably,can not only improve the asphalt performance more fully,but also avoid environmental problems.The main object is the new modified asphalt provided by JiangSu BAOLI asphalt CO.LTD, and the performances of the asphalt are characterized by three conventional indexes of asphalt,SHRP tests, and the microscopic observation. Separation test is done to make sure of the storage stability of the new asphalt.Then, mixture tests are done to detect the pavement performance, including the high temperature stability, low temperature stability, water stability and the service durability. The aboved results were compared with those of SBS modified asphalt, to determine the practicability of the new modified asphalt. Test results have shown that, this new kind of modified asphalt has good stability, which satisfies the operating requirement. On the base of good high temperature performance,the new asphalt improves the low temperature performance to a larger degree, which is better than SBS modified asphalt.But with the add of agent, viscosity is larger, and higher temperature of mixing and construction is needed.Finally, based on two experimental roads, the environmental and economic evaluations of useless plastic and rubber as compound modifier are carried out and compared with those of the SBS modified asphalt, to determine the possibility of replacing SBS with the new modifier.
