In recent years, intelligent parking lot based on embedded technology has rised in many domestic cities. An embedded communication module of parking card reader has been developed by the author in a transverse project. This communication module has been designed using embedded system based on ARM and Linux. The vehicle information which comes from the front system using SPI interface is processed by this communication module and uploaded to the computer of parking lot management center in multimode such as CAN,RS485 and TCP/IP.The development history and application status of card reader have been introduced firstly. The concept and development history of embedded system have been introduced as well as the development trend in recent years. The characteristics and the application status of embedded technology have also been introduced. Detailed need analysis has been carried out according to the application demand of the communication module. The design schame of embedded software and hardware of the communication module has been made based on the analysis.Then the mode of developing an embedded system and building development environment has been illustrated.Secondly, the circuit of core board and expansion board of the embedded communication module have been designed using Samsung’s S3C2410X including the microprocessor circuit, SDRAM circuit, Flash circuit, CS8900A circuit and peripheral interface circuit. Principles of the printed circuit board have been descriped briefly.Then bootloader of the communication module has been developed. The transplantation of Linux operating system to the communication module has been made. Linux application program and drivers of SPI and MCP2510 have been developed according to the embedded communication module hardware platform as well as the serial port and the network chip CS8900A. The linux file system has been created in Cramfs format.A card reader communication module was developed adopting ARM-Linux embedded system in this subject. This mudule has realized all the functions required and set aside a certain system expansion space as foundation for the further development.
