With the development of the society, great changes have taken place in the concept of university education and the teaching methods of architecture. The center of Chinese higher education transforms from the traditional teacher to the student, from the teaching material to the activity, from the classroom to the practice. Teaching of architecture advocates the Open Teaching Method with paying more attention to the interaction between teachers and students. In this discussion, communication style of the learning process, the students with different points of views, ideas can learn from each other, inspiring creative more inspiration. This helps to maximize students’ creative ability and personality. Under this background, single, enclosed space form of traditional architecture department hall can not meet the needs of students’ learning and communication. More and more attention is paid to the design method of the communication space of the architecture department hall.Under the background of the university education concept and architecture teaching patterns changing, the author carries out field investigation on several representative architectural department halls in domestic universities, collects and studies the date of several architectural department halls in foreign universities. The comparison and analysis results show some characteristics of the communication space in architectural department halls and some problems of the architectural department halls in domestic universities. Then the author points out the influencing factors,implementation of key points and principles of design of architectural department halls in universities. Meantime, the author puts forward the strategies of communication space design and optimization of architectural department halls in domestic universities. In the end, the strategy is validated by an example, which is a combination of the theory with the reality.This thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter explains the background of the study, and points out that the demand of teachers and students to the communication space of the architecture department under the current college architectural education concept, clarifying the purpose and significance of the study. The second chapter elaborates the theory of intercourse space and summarizes the communicative activities in architectural department halls in universities. This chapter is the theoretical basis and guidance of the study. The third, fourth and fifth chapters are the core chapters of the full text, which carry out field investigation on architectural department halls of universities, and conclude some characteristics of the communication space of architectural department halls in universities and problems in the architectural department halls in domestic universities by comparison and analysis. Besides, the influencing factors, implementation of key points,the principles, the overall design strategies of the communication space design of the architectural department halls in universities and the optimization strategies of all types of communication space. The sixth chapter, a case study of the Communication space design optimization of the architectural department hall at South China University of Technology was analyzed to prove the arguments in previous sections. At the end of this paper, the main conclusions of the study are concluded so as to provide certain reference for the design of communication space of architectural department halls in the future.
