With the speeding of urbanization process, many urban villages within urban construction within are facing spatial reorganization and indigenous inhabitants whose grandparents live in the rural environment also are facing qualitative change in living environment--- be arranged to live in the urban environment by government. But the visible living environment has changed and the invisible social relation between the neighborhoods is still continuing in the new resettlement areas. Compared with relatively indifferent traditional urban residents, urban villagers have common life background and social status, similar values, same lifestyle and outdoor activities, making indigenous inhabitants living in settlement area have more common topics and more intimate neighborhood relations and have different needs with urban residents in outdoor space. Creating residential outdoor space in urban villages needs to adapt to the original neighborhood relationship of indigenous inhabitants, and understand the outdoor activity behavior under this relationship, ensuring their interaction efficiency in resettlement urban villages. The resettlement living area for urban villagers is an urban residential form, which tends to follow a variety of means and standard of urban residential area in construction, but it is a special urban residential area, because the different-composed residents makes the settlement area different from traditional urban residential in terms of the outdoor neighborhood interaction space requirements. So this paper employs theory study, survey, questionnaires, behavioral observation, interviews and other research methods, conducts observation and researches on representative resettlement living area for urban villagers and non-resettlement urban residential district in Xi’an city. After comparing the behavioral differences between two kinds of residents and analyzing the particularity of indigenous residents’ outdoor activities behavior in urban villages, this paper summarizes the design strategy of neighborhood interaction space suitable for the resettlement living area for urban villagers based on the modern urban area pattern.Through research and interviews, it’s found that because the resettlement-type residential area project does not have commercial pressure and commercial value development is also more limited, so developers and construction parties do not pay enough attention to such projects. As for many resettlement urban villages’ outdoor environment, space and confidentiality is weak, design mode is seriously stereotyped, public facilities arrangement is unreasonable, design and construction level is rough. All of these affect the environmental quality of residential area and outdoor activities.Through the questionnaire, behavioral observation, interviews and other methods, this paper compares outdoor activity behavior between Xi’an settlement urban villagers and urban residents, finding that resettlement urban villagers have following characteristic in outdoor neighborhood activities: activity rhythm is slow, outdoor time is long, the number of gathering small group is large, neighborhood’s interaction is strong and they like doing activities in residential units, chess activities account higher ratio, in addition, there hold a banquet in living district, and have demands for cultural entertainment activities and rural collective memory. These characteristics and needs are the main different between settlements urban villagers and traditional urban residents.Based on the related theory of neighborhood interaction, common problems of the outdoor environment of settlement urban villages and their interaction characteristics of outdoor activities, the author proposes design strategy of outdoor neighborhood interaction space for resettlement urban village residential: provide outdoor public cultural entertainment and other gathering places, enlarge space activities in front of residential units, provide gathering spaces for many small groups, consider the chess entertainment, take into account the parking demand of non-motor vehicle, consider setting up a fruit and vegetable planting site to show the villagers’ collective memory elements and consider the economical efficiency of construction. Through the research and implementation of these strategies, the author hopes to achieve the goal of promoting the outdoor activities of the indigenous inhabitants in urban villages.
