With the development of the energy, all countries in the world put the development of the smart grid on the important agenda. The distribution part, which is directly connected with customers, plays on a very important role in the whole process of power production. So there will be the concept of intelligent power distribution network based on the distribution automation emerges. In order to meet the specific needs of distribution automation development, the study on the requirements of the distribution management terminal is important with the development trend of smart grid distribution automation system.Based on an embedded Linux operating system and the CAN communication technologies, the core module of distribution terminal has been designed in this paper. Firstly, according to development status and trends of distribution automation, this paper presents the the function, capacity, parameter index of the distribution management terminal, and the scheme of the entire design. The main content of the entire design of the program has a multi-CPU architecture, interior CAN bus communication and fully modular. Then, this paper describes the design process of each module of the distribution management terminal from the hardware design and core software corresponding with the design requirements. The hardware circuits and software are designed. Analog data acquisition module, switch input/output module, power module, communication module are included. Linux system is successfully transplanted to the communication module. In particular, the switch input/output module using small is embedded with systems RT-Thread, which ensures real-time. Finally, functions of remote measure and control, protection as well as interior CAN bus communication are tested.The testing results show that the distribution terminal meets the expected requirements. Further testing, modification and improvement will be done. It will have broad application prospects.
