The inscription of Macau’ s historic centre on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005 was not based on any individual entity of a local monument. It is the uniqueness in the setting and layout of the old city center t hat has contributed to a genuine portrait of the history of Macau ’ s urban development. This layout was originated from the historic center ’ s linear city development format. Based on this initial concept of linear city design, the public square of Macau, historic centre became the focal point for the composition of Macau ’s linear city planning. This model layout signifies the formation of a typical European linear city, planned and developed under strong Chinese tradition. This paper explores the area style and space plot of city layout in order to investigate the process of transformation of the historic centre under the cultural influence of both Chinese and Portuguese. This paper also attempts to offer a comprehensive analysis on the changes of local activities and urban planning centred around the historic centre. Based on this mapping of the historical and cultural development, this research could hopefully, shed light on the direction of any prospective transformation and regeneration of the city centre. This will inevitably provide solid basis on the protection and maintenance of the original style and layout of Macau’s historic centre of the future generations.
